Advancement in rank within the NJROTC unit is based on time in each grade and most importantly on continued overall sustained performance. In order to advance form cadet seaman recruit to cadet chief petty officer, a cadet must demonstrate a described degree of proficiency in military drill, ceremonies, and military knowledge, accompanied with good grades, attendance, and professionalism as described in the promotion chart criteria provided. In order to be advanced to an officer grade a cadet must normally be in his/her third year or higher and under special circumstances, be field promoted by the SNSI or NSI. Regardless, all ranks are appointed by the SNSI. Each cadet has an equal opportunity to advance to the rank of Cadet Lieutenant Commander for company size unit or Cadet Commander for a Battalion size unit as the Commanding Officer of the Corps of Cadets.
