Chief Warrant Officer Five John Salgado USN (Ret.)

In September 1982 (age 17), John Salgado enlisted into the United States Naval Reserve under the Delayed Entry Program (DEP). He graduated from Evander Childs High School, Bronx, N.Y. June 1983 and enlisted into active duty service in United States Navy, September 1983 at the New York Military Entrance Processing Station Brooklyn, N.Y and reported as a Seaman Recruit to Company 191 at Recruit Training Command, Naval Training Center, Orlando Florida for Basic Training.

In November 1983, Airman Recruit Salgado reported to Naval Aviation Technical Training Command, Millington TN. for Aviation Structural Mechanic (Structures) “A” School. In March 1984, AMSAR Salgado reported and graduated from Naval Aviation Schools Command, Naval Aviation Aircrew Candidate School. His first duty station was VRC-40, NAS Norfolk for Shore Duty.

In October 1987, AMS2 Salgado reported to and graduated from Naval Aviation Schools Command, Search and Rescue Swimmer School NAS Pensacola, FL. In February 1988, he reported to HC-3, Fleet Replacement Aircrew School at NAS North Island, CA and ultimately to HC-6, NAS Norfolk, VA in July 1988 for Sea Duty as a 1st Crewman on the CH/UH-46 participating in Operations Desert Shield/Storm and making four deployments; twice on the USS KALAMAZOO, UNSN SIRIUS, USS MT.BAKER.

In April 1992, AMS1 Salgado reported to HC-8, NAS Norfolk VA. for Shore Duty and deployed for HURRICANE ANDREW Relief Efforts onboard USS SYLVANIA and promoted to Chief Petty Officer in 1994.

In May 1995, AMSC Salgado reported to HC-8 for Sea Duty as Detachment Seven and Detachment Three LCPO, and deployed for TWA FLIGHT 800 SALVAGE OPERATION onboard USS OAK HILL off Long Island N.Y. while making two Persian Gulf deployments on USNS CONCORD and USS SUPPLY.

In March of 1999, AMSC Salgado was assigned to HC-2 for Shore Duty as a UH/VH-3 SAR/Crewchief at NAS Norfolk VA. He was promoted to Senior Chief Petty Officer in 1999. In September 2000, while assigned to HC-2, he was commissioned to Aviation Maintenance Technician Chief Warrant Officer 2.

In November 2000, CWO2 Salgado reported to VFA-87, F/A-18 for Sea Duty, deploying with ENTERPRISE Battle Group and participating in Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001. In 2003, he also deployed with THEODORE ROOSEVELT Battle Group and participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In October 2003, CWO2 Salgado reported to VAW-124, E-2C for Sea Duty. He promoted to Chief Warrant Officer 3 September 2004. In 2005 he deployed with THEODORE ROOSEVELT Battle Group and participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In December 2006, CWO3 Salgado reported to HSC-28, MH-60s for Sea Duty as Detachment TWOs DET Maintenance Officer and deployed aboard USNS COMFORT in 2007 to Central America, South America and the Caribbean providing much needed medical aid to 13 countries.

In January 2008, CWO3 Salgado reported to HM-14, Airborne Mine Countermeasures Department for Shore Duty. He promoted to Chief Warrant Officer 4 in September and was assigned as the Maintenance Material Control Officer, Assistant Maintenance Officer, and Maintenance Officer.

In April of 2010, he reported to the HM-14, MH-53Es for Sea Duty and was assigned as the Maintenance Material Control Officer, Assistant Maintenance Officer, Quality Assurance Officer and Detachment ONE Maintenance Officer. He was forward deployed seven months to Pohang, Korea in 2011 for Wave X-Participated in Clear Horizon 2011 and 2012 for Wave XII for a short period. In August 2012, he was promoted to Chief Warrant Officer 5.

In Sept 2013, CWO5 Salgado reported to “Mustang University” for Shore Duty and his final Navy duty station at Officer Training Command, LDO/CWO Academy, Naval Base Newport, R.I. for Instructor Duty.

During his 33 years of service, he has received numerous personal awards, including the Meritorious Service Medal, six Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medals, five Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medals, four Good Conduct Medals, twelve Sea Service Ribbons and numerous campaign and service medals.

He was a qualified Aircrewman and SAR swimmer, gaining more than 3,200 flight hours in various fixed and rotary wing aircraft. He also successfully completed one SAR recovery and made twelve deployments to multiple locations.

He holds an M.B.A. in General Management from Trident University and a B.S. Degree in Professional Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
